Art Liestman - Surface Enhanced Woodturning

Mondrian

Work in my Mondrian series is colored using layers of thin acrylic inks and alcohol-based dyes. This coloring technique produces rich dark surfaces that enhance the figure of the underlying wood. The dark colors invite closer inspection which reveals more subtle details.

The wood's surface is subdivided into regions by incised lines. These regions are colored with several different colors of dyes before an ink layer is applied. Sometimes there are additional incised marks or textures on the surfaces of the regions and sometimes the walls are pierced. These dark colored regions are inspired by early 20th century paintings by Mondrian and Klee.
